  • About Mentoring

Mentoring involves the sharing of knowledge, skills, and experience to facilitate personal and professional growth. Unlike coaching, mentoring is centered around sharing wisdom and experience, fostering a supportive environment for both personal development and career advancement.

  • Introduction to SFTA Mentoring Program

The SFTA is pleased to offer a mentoring program designed to support our members in learning, growing, and advancing their careers. Our mentors are experienced volunteers from within the SFTA community, dedicated to guiding and supporting their mentees through personalized mentorship.

  • Mentoring Pool

Mentors: SFTA members with extensive professional experience who volunteer their time to guide and support others. They bring diverse expertise from various sectors of finance and technology.

  • Eligibility and Assignment

Mentee Eligibility: Typically has 5-10 years or less of total experience or is looking to develop in a specific field. They should demonstrate a commitment to personal and professional development.

Mentor Eligibility: Has significant experience beyond that of the mentee, with a minimum of 10 years of work experience. Mentors should be willing to share their expertise and provide guidance.

Assignment Process: Matching is based on aligning mentor expertise with mentee needs, as indicated in the application forms. This ensures a productive and mutually beneficial mentoring relationship.

  • Mentoring Process

Application: Forms are available on the SFTA website. Only fully completed forms will be considered to ensure a proper matching process.

Duration: The program lasts 6 months, with the SFTA organizing kick-off and closure sessions twice a year. This structure provides a clear timeline and goals for participants.

Sessions: The program includes 10-12 one-to-one sessions, held in person or online, typically once or twice a month. This flexibility accommodates varying schedules and preferences.

Responsibilities: The mentor commits to availability and shares experience, knowledge, and guidance. The mentee is responsible for driving the topics and questions to be addressed, ensuring the sessions are tailored to their needs.

  • Exit and Evaluation

Program Conclusion: The mentoring program concludes after 10-12 sessions, unless both parties agree to extend with SFTA approval. This ensures clarity in the mentoring engagement and allows for program assessment.

    Evaluations:

    • Mentor Evaluation: Mentees evaluate their mentor’s qualifications and teaching ability to provide feedback and ensure quality.
    • Mentee Evaluation: Mentors evaluate their mentee’s motivation and willingness to learn, fostering a reciprocal relationship.
    • Process Evaluation: Participants evaluate the SFTA mentoring program process to facilitate continuous improvement and ensure the program meets participants’ needs.

  • Additional Information

Mentoring relationships are unique and depend on the individuals involved. To make the most of the program, we encourage open communication, active listening, and a willingness to learn and grow on both sides. The SFTA is committed to supporting these relationships and helping our members thrive.
